Indiana Lawmakers Want Review Of Railway Purchase
Canadian National Wants To Speed Up Proposed Buyout Of 198-Mile Line
GARY, Ind. (AP) ―
Indiana's two U.S. senators and a northwest Indiana congressman are asking federal regulators to reject Canadian National Railway's request to speed up review of its proposed purchase of a 198-mile rail line.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky says residents of northwest Indiana would be greatly affected by the purchase and should have the opportunity to voice their concerns.
Some communities around Chicago say rail traffic could triple if Canadian National purchases the 198-mile Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway.
Visclosky and Senators Evan Bayh and Richard Lugar say the deal threatens plans to expand the Gary/Chicago International Airport and the South Shore commuter rail line.
Canadian National wants approval of the purchase by the end of the year.
