Father, Son Take On Potholes In Gary
Wesley Davis III Takes To D.I.Y. Pothole Filling
GARY, Ind. (Post-Tribune) ―
After driving every day over the same potholes in his street, Wesley Davis III decided he was done waiting for someone else to fix them.
"Our potholes have gotten pretty bad," Davis said.
So he and his son, Wesley Davis IV, ventured out to a hardware store to see what they could do. They found a $7 bag of pothole patch and used it to fill a hole at 11th Avenue and Pyramid Drive.

"I didn't tell anybody I was going to do it," Wesley Davis III, a 51-year-old U.S. Steel employee and Gary native, said. "I just did it."
It took five minutes to fill the 3-feet-by-2-feet hole, they said. Two days later, the patch was dry and cars were rolling over it.
"I was surprised that it worked as well as it did," Davis said.
Davis and his son plan to purchase more of that pothole patch and fill the rest of the potholes in his subdivision just west of Broadway.
He said he started calling the city about a month ago to ask if a crew could fix the potholes on the street. After leaving voice mails, he said, he heard no response.
City officials, who are grappling with the possible loss of 38 percent of their $63 million budget this year, couldn't be reached Tuesday evening to respond to Davis' comments. Several leaders, including Mayor Rudy Clay, have asked residents to volunteer and take responsibility for their own neighborhoods.
Still, the Davises point out they already pay property taxes so the city will come by and fill potholes for them.
"We shouldn't be out here doing stuff like this," Davis said.
