Autopsy: Gary Infant's Death A Homicide

GARY, Ind. (Post-Tribune) ― The death of a 5-month-old northwest Indiana boy Thursday, originally believed to be an accidental drowning, has been ruled a homicide by the Lake County Coroner's office.

The coroner's office said Friday an autopsy found multiple skull fractures due to blunt force trauma on Ryne White Jr., who lived at 4377 W. 23rd Ave. in the Oak Knoll Renaissance apartments in Gary.

The baby's father, Ryne A. White, 23, told police he was bathing his son in the kitchen sink when another young child began crying in an upstairs bedroom.

White told police he went to check on the crying child -- a 9-month-old -- and when he returned, Ryne was not breathing.

The baby's mother, Leneka Logan, 20, returned home and found White "in shock," holding the infant.

She attempted to revive the child with CPR, but was not successful, police said.

Ryne Jr. was pronounced dead at his home about 2 p.m. Thursday.

Detectives Cpl. Arturo Azcona and Willie Ervin questioned the infant's parents separately at the police station, but neither was in custody.

The case is being investigated by the Lake County Coroner's office, Gary police, and the Lake County Crime Lab.
