Daycare Provider Charged In Baby's Death
VALPARAISO, Ind. (Post-Tribune) ―
A northwest Indiana daycare provider faces a felony battery charge in the death of a 6-month-old infant in her care in September.
Deborah Parlock, 53, of Chesterton is charged with battery resulting in the death of a person less than 14 years of age, a Class A felony. She was taken to the Porter County Jail on Wednesday.
Nicholas Munden was found unresponsive on Sept. 19 at the care that Parlock operates in her home in Liberty Township, south of Chesterton.
He was taken to the University of Chicago Hospitals and doctors took him off life support on Sept. 29. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office ruled his death a homicide by blunt force trauma to the head.
The medical examiner said blunt force trauma can be the result of someone shaking a baby, but can be caused by other means. The doctor who performed the autopsy said she found signs of possible previous brain injuries.
Parlock's daycare center was operating without a license, which is legal if it cares for five or fewer children. Shortly after Munden's death, the center was warned about caring for eight children.
According to the state Family and Social Services Administration, Parlock did have a license at one time, but it was revoked in January 2003 for substantiated abuse, although it was given back in December 2003 on appeal.
