Carjacker Held Man Up At Jewel Express

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (Post-Tribune) ― A northwest Indiana man was arrested for an attempted carjacking at a Jewel Express early Wednesday morning after store patrons stopped him.
Thomas Holifield of the 100 block of Seymour Avenue in Michigan City was charged with attempted carjacking.

Michigan City olice were dispatched to the Jewel Express at 3522 Franklin St. around 6:20 a.m. for a robbery in progress. When they arrived, they saw a man being held down on the ground.

Officers spoke with the victim, who said he had exited the store and, while standing by his vehicle, felt someone's arm at the back of his neck.

Holifield allegedly showed a black gun, pointed it at the victim and demanded the keys to his vehicle, the victim told police. They struggled for the gun and the victim fell to the ground. Holifield again demanded the keys while pointing the gun at the victim, the victim said. The gun went off and the victim was wounded in the arm.

Another patron ran up to Holifield and threw a cup of coffee in his face. The patron knocked Holifield to the ground and held him there until police arrived.

The weapon was recovered and was found to be a Powerline BB gun. The victim received a wound to his arm as well as abrasions to his knee and elbow.
