At Least 1 New Stop Coming To Yellow Line 'L'

Skokie Swift Now Just Stops At Howard, Dempster Terminals

SKOKIE, Ill. (CBS) ― Plans are underway to add at least one new stop to the Skokie Swift CTA 'L' line.

Currently, the Yellow Line stops only at its two terminals – the Howard depot in Rogers Park, and the Skokie depot on Dempster Street. The Yellow Line is the only CTA rapid transit line that does not continue downtown.

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the CTA has already approved a new Yellow Line stop at Oakton Street in downtown Skokie. Ground could be broken on a new station next year.

A second new stop is now in "talking" stages, and would probably serve south Evanston, at Ridge, Asbury or Dodge avenues.

The Yellow Line was originally constructed as the Niles Center Line in the early 20th century, and made seven stops between the two terminal points. The line shut down in the 1940s, and when it reopened as the Skokie Swift in the 1960s, it only stopped at Howard and Dempster.

Until only a few years ago, the Yellow Line trains derived their power from overhead wires rather than a third rail. This past March, the Yellow Line began running weekend service.
