Contractors Blamed For Northwestern Library Fire

Fire Damaged Roof; No One Injured

EVANSTON, Ill. (STNG) ― Roofers working on the top of a library on the campus of Northwestern University are being blamed for a fire there Thursday afternoon in north suburban Evanston. No one was injured.

The Evanston Fire Department received a report about 3 p.m. of the fire at the Northwestern University Library at 1970 Campus Dr., according to a department release.

When crews from Engine 21 arrived, they found the fire burning on the roof of the five-story building. Fire companies entered the building and a short time later, found the fire had been put out by contractors. Additional companies made sure the building was ventilated, evacuated and the fire hadn't spread, the release said.

Though some water and smoke entered the library, fire damage was limited to the roof.

Northwestern staff and students were temporarily displaced but were able to return when the building was declared safe, the release said.

A preliminary investigation determined the cause was "hot work" being performed by roofers.

No injuries were reported, according to the release, which said the building needed minor repairs.
