Horses Who Survived Crash Looking For New Homes

41 Of 59 Horses Involved In Horrible Accident In Lake County Survived And Are Up For Adoption

WADSWORTH, Ill. (CBS) ― The horses who survived a serious crash that killed many other horses last month in Lake County are now in need of new permanent homes.

As CBS 2 North Suburban Bureau Chief Katie McCall reports, they're called the 41 From 41 – survivors from a Highway 41 trailer accident that killed 18 of the 59 horses riding in a double-decker trailer when it rolled over. Some died at the scene, others had to be put down.

But Wednesday it was adoption day at Carney Farm in Wadsworth, a chance for the recovering animals to have a new start.

One horse lucky to be alive suffered three lacerated arteries and he is still wearing a cast, but to the Wisconsin family taking him home, he's perfect.

"I haven't been able to sleep for nights," said Joan Hanover of Bristol Horse Farm in Bristol, Wis. "Just thrilled, thrilled."

Since the October 27 accident, Donna Ewing of the Barrington-based Hooved Animal Rescue and Protection Society has cared for the horses.

"This is a labor of love, and they give so much," Ewing said.

So far the group has received 250 applications for the 41 surviving horses. They're reviewing each application very carefully to be sure every horse finds an appropriate home.

Dan Kelly, a Wadsworth resident who assisted at the scene of the accident, came to pick up two new friends for his pony riding business.

"It feels really good to help these animals, just pulling them out of the trailer and knowing they're going to end up with a good home," Kelly said.

Although there are many applicants, people like Kelly, who provided emergency care for the horses that night, are receiving special consideration as a reward for helping to save their lives.

If you're interesting in adopting or helping to care for the horses, call the Hooved Animal Rescue and Protection Society at (847) 382-0503.
