Gurnee Cop Arrested For Sexual Assault

GURNEE, Ill. (Lake County News-Sun) ― Gurnee police announced Friday afternoon the arrest of one of their own on predatory criminal sexual assault charges.

Highly decorated Officer Jay Simon, was arrested at the Gurnee Police Department without incident about 12:25 p.m. on an arrest warrant, according to a release from Gurnee police. Simon, 36, the father of three, is charged with two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, a Class X felony; one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony; and one count of aggravated assault, a Class A misdemeanor, the release said.

A $1.5 million bond was set for Simon during a bond court appearance Friday, Gurnee police Cmdr. Jay Patrick said.

Patrick had no specific information on what Simon is accused of or his alleged victims. Simon's arrest was the result of an investigation conducted by officers assigned to the Lake County Children's Advocacy Center, which is a division of the Lake County State's Attorney's Office.

Simon has been on administrative leave since the police department was notified of the investigation in mid-May and will remain on leave until the end of all court proceedings, the release said.

Simon was praised at a Gurnee Village Board meeting last month for making 47 driving-under-the-influence arrests in 2007, giving him a cumulative career total of 397 DUI arrests.

Simon was also honored in 2005, 2006 and 2007 as the village's "top cop" and also was cited by the Illinois Department of Transportation --- Division of Traffic Safety for the number of DUI arrests while a member of the department's Operational Traffic Enforcement Team.

A Michigan native, he joined the Gurnee force in 2002 after serving in the Navy as a senior investigator tracking down AWOL sailors.
