Weekend Fire Guts Evanston Apartment Building
Many Residents Displaced, But None Injured
EVANSTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
Several residents of an Evanston apartment building are displaced but no one was injured, from a fire over the weekend.
The Evanston Fire Department received 911 reports of smoke in the building at 2529 Jackson Ave. a little more than a mile west of the Northwestern University campus, at approximately 11:40 a.m. Sunday.
When they got to the scene, Engine Company 23 reported heavy smoke in the basement and the first floor, according to a release from the Evanston Fire Department.
The building was occupied at the time but everyone got out safely and no injuries were reported, the release said.
The fire was completely extinguished within an hour. One cat sustained smoke inhalation and was resuscitated by firefighters on-scene using a special oxygen mask designed for animals, the release said. The cat was later returned to its owner.
The fire was contained to the basement area, the release said. Smoke forced the displacement of several residents. Residents of the unaffected areas of the building returned home later that afternoon.
Th cause of the fire remains under investigation Tuesday.
Evanston Fire and Police officials worked with the American Red Cross to assist in finding temporary housing for those displaced. Damage was estimated at $100,000 and limited to 2527 Jackson Ave.
