MUNDELEIN, Ill. (Lake County News-Sun) ―
Police confiscated 636 guns from a man who used to own a gunshop in Mundelein after he sold three 9mm handguns to undercover officers with the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group.
Michael Sonka, 55, of 910 Granville Road, Mundelein, was charged with gun running, a Class 1 felony, authorities said Monday.
Mundelein police gathered intelligence that indicated Sonka was selling guns from his home, and they contacted MEG for assistance, authorities said.
Sonka surrendered his federal firearms license four months ago. That license enables an individual or company to engage in business pertaining to the manufacture of firearms and ammunition or the interstate and intrastate sale of firearms.
Sonka agreed to meet with an undercover officer to discuss the purchase of handguns, and the officer went to Sonka's residence Friday. After a brief conversation, the officer allegedly was able to buy the pistols and five boxes of 9mm ammunition.
After the officer left the building, MEG and Mundelein police moved in and confiscated the guns and other evidence.
Police said Sonka did not abide by the required three-day waiting period and failed to comply with other necessary documentation for selling firearms in the alleged sale to the undercover agent.
Sonka is listed on Geejay -- www.shooting-hunting.com -- a shooting and hunting online source. He advertised himself as Mike's Sporting Goods of Mundelein and listed himself as a federal firearms-licensed dealer who could handle transfers and also sold rifle scopes and other shooting accessories.
