At least seven people remained hospitalized Saturday morning after a gunman shot five people dead and injured 15 others before turning the gun on himself at Northern Illinois University.
As CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports, three patients were taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove following the shooting. Two of those three remained at the hospital Saturday morning. One was identified as student Maria Ruiz-Santana, who was in serious condition. Another, a male victim, was in fair condition, officials said.
Another patient remained at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb in an unknown condition. Another patient was at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition, another at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford in an unknown condition, and another at Rockford Memorial
Unnum Rahman, 19, of Plainfield, remained at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center Saturday morning in stable condition. She had suffered injuries to her right eye and arm and was undergoing eye surgery.
On Friday, officials at Good Samaritan said they were seeing signs of progress.
"Our first patient with multiple shotgun blasts to the head, neck and chest still remains in critical condition but is improving," said Dr. Michael Iwanicki of Good Samaritan. "Our patient with soft tissue injury and ocular injuries is in fair condition. And finally, our third patient has been upgraded to serious."
As for those who have lost their lives in the shooting, friends and family are preparing to say goodbye.
Daniel Parmenter, 20, of Westchester was an NIU sophomore, and friends say he was always willing to help others.
Gayle Dubrowski, 20, was also a sophomore, and was known as a person with a big heart.
Ryanne Mace, 19, was studying psychology and wanted to be a counselor.
Catalina Garcia, 20, of Cicero was on track to become an elementary school teacher and was known for her kindness.
Also hoping to become a teacher was Julianna Gehant, 32, who enrolled at NIU after a career in the U.S. Army.
