Vermont Grants Preliminary OK To Gay Marriage

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) ― The Vermont House has advanced a bill that would allow gay couples to marry.

The bill has already cleared the state Senate. It passed on Thursday in a 95-52 House vote — enough for approval but not enough to override a promised veto by Republican Gov. Jim Douglas.

It goes up Friday for final approval, a largely procedural step before being sent to the governor.

Vermont pioneered civil unions nine years ago. It would become the third state to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry if the bill becomes law. Massachusetts and Connecticut already do.
