The lawyer for Megan McAllister, the fiancée of accused Craigslist Killer Philip Markoff, says the wedding is off.
Robert Honecker confirmed Thursday morning that plans for the August ceremony at the Jersey Shore were being dismantled. He said the engagement itself has not been called off, but there are no plans at this time to reschedule the wedding.
JAIL VISIT, MOVING ON
Markoff got a visit from his fiancée for the first time since he was charged with murder and armed robbery related to three hotel incidents in Boston and Rhode Island.
McAllister was silent as she quickly walked into the Nashua Street Jail Wednesday evening, flanked by her attorney and her mother, Lynn. McAllister did not appear to be wearing an engagement ring.
It's the first visit she and Markoff have met since he was arrested early last week.
Markoff is accused of killing Julissa Brisman on April 14 at the Marriott Copley Place. Police say he contacted Brisman through an ad she placed on the web site Craigslist.
He is also charged with the robbery of a woman at the Westin hotel in Boston four days earlier. He has been linked to a botched robbery of a stripper who was held at gunpoint in a Warwick, Rhode Island motel room on April 16.
He and McAllister were planning to get married in August. She was with him when he was arrested on April 20.
McAllister has stood by her fiancé, saying he is innocent.
FIANCEE 'DISTRAUGHT' ABOUT MEETING WITH MARKOFF
McAllister met with Markoff for about 25 minutes Wednesday. She did not speak to the media.
Her attorney, Robert Honecker, said the two had a "candid, frank discussion," though he didn't know specifics of what was said. He said his client had been distraught about coming to Boston to meet with Markoff.
"She's done it now, and I think she feels good about coming up and seeing him," Honecker said. "But now it's time to move on with other things in her life."
When asked about McAllister's demeanor after meeting with Markoff, Honecker said she was emotional.
"But she's a very bright, articulate young woman, and she's beginning to understand that she has to find strength from those around her and from those who support her," Honecker said. "I think this was a big step for her to realize the seriousness of the charges her fiancé faces. And also that she has to get on and take care of herself and the rest of her life."
Honecker didn't know if McAllister would meet with Markoff, again. He said she immediately returned to New Jersey after Wednesday's meeting.
"She's going to take up her life with her friends and her family in New Jersey," Honecker said.
He added if the District Attorney doesn't request a meeting with McAllister, "I don't expect her to return in the near future."
Honecker said so far the Suffolk County District Attorney has not requested to meet with McAllister or to testify before a Grand Jury.
'COMPELLING' EVIDENCE AGAINST MARKOFF
Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conolly has called evidence against Markoff compelling.
Markoff's fingerprints have reportedly been found on a wall of the Holiday Inn Express in Warwick, where a stripper said she was assaulted by a man she met through Craigslist.
He also reportedly sent text messages from the hotel.
Boston police revealed late last week that a handgun found in Markoff's apartment is a preliminary match to the murder weapon used to kill Brisman. Brisman was found dead inside the Marriott after she advertised massage services on Craigslist.
Police, using a search warrant following Markoff's arrest, also found underwear and other items belonging to victims, along with a handgun hidden in a copy of the medical textbook "Gray's Anatomy."
The Boston Globe is reporting Markoff's fingerprints turned up on plastic ties and duct tape left at one of the crime scenes.
Markoff, 23, a Boston University medical student, allegedly met Brisman through Craigslist.
Markoff is currently on suicide watch at the Nashua Street jail where he's been held without bail since his arrest.
Authorities have been keeping a closer eye on him since shoelace marks were found on his neck last Thursday, sources told CBS station WBZ-TV in Boston.
His parents, brother and sister-in-law visited him in jail last week.
