Woman Attacked With Caustic Liquid In Chicago

Police: Robbery Victim Will Probably Need Plastic Surgery

 CBS News Interactive: Crime Beat

(CBS) A woman is facing plastic surgery after two assailants threw caustic liquid in her face during a robbery in Chicago.

The attack happened around 6:30 a.m. Police are searching for the two female offenders, one of whom neighbors say might be a child, reported CBS station WBBM-TV.

The woman suffered first and second degree burns to her face and upper body. She was taken to an area hospital and is listed in serious condition.

The victim was trying to get into her car when the two females approached and threw the liquid on her. Hours later, the as-yet-unidentified substance was still on the inside driver's seat, the exterior of the vehicle and on the ground.

Neighbors said a man going out for a jog saw everything.

"He saw a woman and a child - a 12-year-old child - walking, and they had coffee cups, and they came next to her and poured the liquid in her eyes, and took her bag," said neighbor Maria Cortez.

"Who would do something like that and expose a child to the crime?" added neighbor Carline Murillo. "It's very scary."

The woman screamed loudly, took off some of her clothes and ran back to her basement apartment, as neighbors called police. They say her eyes were shut when paramedics took her away.

A surveillance camera at an apartment building nearby captured images Monday morning. The building manager declined to release the tape, but did show it to WBBM-TV.

The video shows three people exiting a sport-utility vehicle and running down the street toward the scene at 6:30 a.m., and then the people run back to the vehicle and it pulls away.

Police have been alerted to the video.
