Suburban 10-Year-Old Boy Killed In Rome Accident

by Dana Kozlov
ROME, Italy (CBS) ― A suburban community deeply grieves Sunday after an unexpected crash kills a Tinley Park boy.

Ten-year old Kyle Peck was in Rome with his parents to watch his older brother , Anthony, compete in a skating world championship.

Instead of celebrating that international feat, the family is making funeral plans.

CBS 2's Dana Kozlov met with many of Kyle's friends as they gathered to remember and honor the fifth grader.

"Kyle was excited, blowing his horn, saying, 'We did it. We did it!" said the boy's cousin, Becky Peck.

That turned out to be the last few seconds of 10-year-old Kyle's. The Tinley Park fifth grader was in Rome with his family for his older brother's world figure roller skating championship this weekend, when he was hit and killed by a car right after his brother placed third in his event.

His cousin says the family was crossing a busy street - holding hands - when a driver ran a red light.

"They heard the screeling of tires. It's Kyle! It's Kyle," Becky Peck said.

Peck was killed instantly and the driver arrested.

"We were all in shock. We didn't want to believe it at all," said Amy Garnder, the roller rink manager.

Word of the tragedy prompted more than 100 people to gather at Kyle Peck's house for a candlelight vigil. The Peck family owns the Lynwood Sports Center. John Peck has coached dozens of children - including his own - for more than a decade. Kyle himself had recently won a national skating award.

"Kyle is such a great kid, so close in their family," said a family friend, Missy Huppert.

A family friend says Kyle's family will be in court Monday, and they are still working to get his body released. They will try to return home later this week.
