The Underclassman

Richard Roeper: "Skip It"

(CBS) The Labor Day weekend is traditionally a dead period for new movies, but this year we have "The Underclassman" with Nick Cannon. I know, I have chills too.

Nick Cannon is actually a likable young actor and he's done some good work in other movies like "Drumline," but here he's doing a bad Chris Tucker impersonation--and I don't even like Chris Tucker. Cannon plays a youthful-looking cop who goes undercover at a private school to investigate a murder.

The lazy script relies on endless jokes about dorky whites trying to assume hip-hop personalities--routines we've seen in dozens of movies already.

Roselyn Sanchez is a beautiful woman and a bad actress, who has been in one terrible film after another. Here she ventures into Mary Kay Letourneau territory as a teacher who gets awfully snuggly with her new student. Now remember, she thinks he's 16.

Rated PG-13, "The Underclassman" is one of those movies that will be on video in about four months, and you'll say, "Gee, I missed that one when it came out." Lucky you. Skip It!
