Stealth

Richard Roeper: "Rent It"

(CBS) If you've seen the ads for "Stealth," you'd think it's a Jamie Foxx movie, but Foxx actually has about the fourth-biggest role in the film. But the biggest stars of all are the special effects.

"Stealth" is one of those summer action movies that's all about the sound and the fury, and who cares if it makes sense? We're in the near future, and Jamie Foxx, Josh Lucas and Jessica Biehl are the three best Navy pilots since Maverick, Goose and Ice in "Top Gun."

Yeah, I'm buying Jessica Biehl as a top Naval officer. She must have started training when she was six. But I have to admit that Lucas, Foxx and Biehl all give sincere performances against the backdrop of a ludicrous story involving an unmanned Stealth bomber that joins the team and starts talking like HAL from "2001: A Space Odyssey."

Director Rob Cohen is so in love with flashy camera movements and teeth-rattling special effects that he undermines his own attempt to create an entertaining popcorn movie. He make so many quick cuts and zooms that we can't even appreciate the otherwise impressive flight sequences.

Rated PG-13, "Stealth" is yet another summer film that isn't quite worth your $9 or $10, but it will be worth a spin once it comes out on DVD. So, wait to Rent It.
