Proof

Richard Roeper: "See It"

(CBS) "Proof" stars Oscar-winners Gwyneth Paltrow and Anthony Hopkins, and it's based on a Pulitzer prize-winning play.

This is the kind of movie that's made for Oscar, and at least one cast member is sure to be nominated.

The University of Chicago is front and center in "Proof," which is based on a play written by U of C alum David Auburn. Gwyneth Paltrow will almost certainly get a best actress nomination for her deeply layered performance as Catherine, the daughter of a mathematic genius who went mad.

And, of course, that's Anthony Hopkins, who could get a best supporting actor nomination as Catherine's father. He's seen only in flashbacks as we bounce back and forth between the immediate aftermath of his death and the final years of his life.

Hope Davis plays Catherine's older sister, who worries that Catherine has inherited her father's instability.

Rated PG-13, "Proof" is a film about family, trust, betrayal, genius and madness. It's a grown-up movie for smart audiences. See it.
