Broken Flowers
Richard Roeper: "See It"
(CBS)
Bill Murray launched his career with energized comedic performances in which he was all over the screen--but now he's become the master of the low-key deadpan performance.
"Broken Flowers," one of the smartest, funniest and most touching movies of the summer. As he did in "Lost and Translation," Bill Murray conveys a lifetime of emotions with just the slightest facial movement and changes in his eyes. He's Don Johnston, a weary Don Juan who receives a mysterious letter indicating he might have fathered a son 20 years earlier.
That's Jeffrey Wright in a terrifically offbeat performance as the neighbor and amateur sleuth who insists that Don get to the bottom of that letter.
I could watch an entire movie about the friendship between those two. But soon Don is on the road, visiting four ex-lovers, each of whom could have sent that letter. Sharon Stone gives one of her best performances as the widow of a race car driver.
Rated R for adult themes and some full-frontal nudity--don't worry, it's not Bill Murray--"Broken Flowers" is a real gem.
See It.
