In Her Shoes
Richard Roeper: "See It"
(CBS)
Even though I once wrote a book about guy movies and chick flicks, some so-called "female movies" are so good, everyone should see them. Movies like "In Her Shoes."
I've never been a huge fan of Cameron Diaz as a leading lady. She's got a boxer's nose and an over-the-top screen presence. But she gives the performance of a lifetime in this film as Maggie Feller, a thirtyish party girl who gets by on looks, attitude and a distinct lack of conscience.
Toni Collette is Maggie's older sister Rose, a sensible lawyer who has been looking out for Maggie ever sine their mother died when they were very young. But after a particularly ugly incident, Rose throws Maggie out of her life.
Ever since "Terms of Endearment," Shirley MacLaine has been playing variations on the tough, demanding broad with a hidden heart of gold. She sparkles here as the sisters' long-estranged grandmother.
Rated PG-13, "In Her Shoes" is one of the most enriching movie-going experiences of the year. See it.
