Wintry Mix Headed To Chicago
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
Rain, sleet, freezing rain and snow, adding up to a potentially treacherous wintry mix of weather conditions could be headed into the Chicago area over the next two days, according to the National Weather Service. There is also an outside chance of a significant winter storm occurring.
While some snow, with accumulation of no more than an inch, could fall across the area Sunday, the weather service warns that patchy light freezing drizzle may continue into Monday morning. This may cause some slippery conditions on untreated roads, parking lots and sidewalks.
A storm system developing over the southern plains Monday will bring the potential for a mix of rain, snow, sleet and possibly freezing rain to portions of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana late Monday night into early Tuesday.
Precipitation is likely to change over to all snow Tuesday across far northern Illinois, according to the weather service, with the potential for several inches of accumulation by Wednesday morning.
The weather service has issued a winter storm watch north and west of Chicago Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning.
The weather service cautions, though, that many variables need to come into play for a significant winter storm to develop, and if just one is missing, the potential for a major winter storm decreases substantially. In addition, only a small change in the forecast track of the storm will make the difference between significant snow, ice, or mostly rain for northern Illinois and Indiana.
While confidence in the exact track and intensity of the storm is low at this time, people living in or planning travel across the Midwest Monday night into Tuesday should closely monitor later forecasts regarding the potential for adverse winter weather.
