Trial Date Set For Woman Accused In Fatal Fire

Mary Smith Charged With Setting Fire That Killed 4 In Wrigleyville Apartment Building

CHICAGO (AP) ― A homeless woman faces a May 7 trial after being accused of setting a fire that killed four people last year.

Mary Smith is charged with 12 counts of first-degree murder, five counts of aggravated arson, two counts of arson and one count of aggravated battery for allegedly setting a fire in an apartment stairwell March 10, 2007.

Prosecutors say Smith set the fire to warm her feet after losing her shoes.
The fire claimed the lives Jennifer Carlson, Jason Bowers, Joseph Schultz and Jerod Pilgreen -- all in their 20s.

Cook County Circuit Judge James Linn ruled earlier this year that Smith was competent to stand trial after she first was declared unfit in November when doctors testified she suffered from mental disorders.
