Man Charged With Hijacking Cab Outside Wrigley

James Burns Was Caught A Short Distance Away

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― An allegedly intoxicated North Side man was arrested outside Wrigley Field after driving away in a cab after fighting with its driver early Saturday, police said.

James Burns, 24, of the 6600 block of North Glenwood Avenue in the Rogers Park neighborhood was charged with vehicular hijacking, according to police.

Bond was set at $15,000, according to the Department of Corrections database.

About 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Burns, who appeared intoxicated, entered a cab near the intersection of Clark and Addison streets and told its driver to "just drive,'' according to Town Hall District police.

The driver told Burns he couldn't do that because he needed an address and they began arguing. The driver told Burns to get out of the cab but Burns said he couldn't get out, so the driver went outside and opened the door for him and when Burns "jumped out," the two began brawling, police said.

Burns allegedly began chasing the cab driver but after a short distance the driver realized he wasn't being chased anymore and went back to his cab "just in time to see him driving away," police said.

Another cab driver in the area saw what had happened and was able to flag down police, who placed Burns in custody at 3559 N. Clark St.

No one was injured.

Burns is scheduled for a preliminary hearing March 6 in North Felony Court (Br. 42).
