Learning From List Of Top Workplaces For Moms
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
More than 70 percent of all mothers have to bring home the bacon, too, and "Working Mother" magazine has just released their 2008 list of 100 best places to balance career and motherhood.
As CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman reports, sometimes getting the perks those companies have just takes asking.
When Amy Stevenson wants to see her young son, Jake, while on the job all she has to do is take a short walk and she's there. Thanks to subsidized, on-site childcare, she can make those quick visits and more.
"We have great mommy-son time on the way to work and on the way home he tells me about his day -- nice to have that," Stevenson said.
She also takes advantage of Northwestern Memorial's flexible hours to make her career and family life mesh.
Those kinds of things won the hospital mention in "Working Mother's" 100 Best Companies for Moms list.
bite: 24:06 (Maria Lin/Northwestern Memorial Hospital) "That is part of our investment in our employees," said Northwestern Memorial Hospital's Maria Lin.
The magazine names other perks there, including a concierge that runs employees' small errands and free wellness classes so mothers can de-stress.
"We want to ensure that our employees are happy and engaged to provide the best care possible for patients," Lin said.
Plus, happy staffers are less likely to leave a company, which cuts re-hiring and re-training costs.
The Katten Law Firm knows that. The firm also made the list, thanks in part to partner and parent Tara Kamradt, who pushed for mother- and women-friendly initiatives.
Katten has private nursing rooms and around-the-clock lactation consultants for mothers of infants.
All of the workplaces that made the top 100 list offer prenatal programs, flex time and telecommuting options.
