$500K Bond For Woman Who Allegedly Killed Husband
HICKORY HILLS, Ill. (STNG) ―
A southwest suburban woman was ordered held on $500,000 bond Wednesday after being charged with fatally shooting her sick husband because she was tired of caring for him.
At the Bridgeview Courthouse on Wednesday, Cook County Judge Peter Velice set the $500,000 bond for Maria Fabian, charged with one count of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of her husband Michael Fabian on Monday in their Hickory Hills home, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.
According to prosecutors, Maria Fabian, 52, and Michael Fabian, 70, had been married for 18 years. He suffered from cardiopulmonary disease and required an oxygen machine.
On Monday, she allegedly asked her husband to show her how to use a gun, Simonton said, citing court records. Michael Fabian kept about 17 guns in a safe in the home at 8925 S. 79th Ave.
After he took out a gun and showed her how to use it, Maria Fabian allegedly did not return the gun to the safe. Instead, when their 17-year-old son was at school and her husband was sleeping, she shot him once in the back, according to prosecutors.
Michael Fabian then rolled over and told his wife not to shoot him again, but she fired another shot, striking him the upper torso, court records show. She then called 911 and told Oak Lawn police she had shot her husband.
About 5:30 p.m., Hickory Hills police arrived at the home and Maria Fabian told them she had shot and killed her husband, court records show.
She was ordered out of the home and arrested, according to Hickory Hills police. Inside the home, officers found Michael Fabian dead in his bed with two gunshot wounds. Two handguns were found on a kitchen table.
Michael Fabian was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:56 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. A Tuesday autopsy showed he died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide.
According to court records, Maria Fabian told police: "I shot him. I couldn't take it any longer. I shot him twice. I shot him with the big gun."
She also provided a videotaped confession admitting to the murder, police said. In it, she said her husband suffered numerous illnesses, including prostate cancer and diabetes, and expressed frustration about having to care for him.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 22 at the Bridgeview Courthouse, Simonton said. Should Maria Fabian post bond, Judge Bourgeois ordered that she surrender her passport and have no contact with her son.
