Woman Rescued From South Side Fire

CHICAGO (CBS) ―

The police Bomb & Arson section is investigating a Back-of-the-Yards fire that injured two people early Saturday on the South Side.

Firefighters responded at 2:12 a.m. to a blaze in 1 ½-story bungalow at 853 W. 50th St. and found a 60-year-old woman in the attic stairwell, said Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor.

Fire Lt. Mike Tobar and firefighter Thomas McGuire, both from Truck 18, rescued the woman and paramedics took her to the University of Chicago Hospitals in "stable" condition with smoke inhalation and cuts, MacGregor said. A man who tried to enter the home was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition with cuts from broken glass.

"Heavy black smoke. We had to mask up right away. We had to be in full turn-out gear, otherwise we'd have been burned," said Chicago Fire Lt. Mike Tobar.

"Somehwere in the dining room I imagine is where we found the woman, and hopefully she's doing fine," said Lt. Tom McGuire.

The fire department's Office of Fire Investigation determined the blaze was started in multiple locations with paper and open flame. The case has been turned over to the police Bomb & Arson section, who will investigate for criminal activity, MacGregor said.

The house was equipped with working smoke detectors, but interior clutter made it difficult for firefighters to locate and rescue the resident, MacGregor said.
