Woman, 2 Cats Rescued From 2-Alarm Fire

CHICAGO (STNG) ― Firefighters rescued a woman and two cats from the top floors of a burning Ukrainian Village apartment building early Sunday on the Near West Side.

The fire started about 12:15 a.m. in the basement of a four-story building at 1858 W. Chicago Ave. and was elevated to a second alarm, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado said. An H&R Block and other business are on the first floor and apartments on the upper floors.

An EMS Plan 1, which automatically sends five ambulances to the scene, was also requested, but nobody was injured or hospitalized, Rosado said.

When firefighters arrived they saw a woman waiving from a third-floor window and firefighters used a 35-foot ladder to get her out of the building, Rosado said.

Two cats were also safely brought down from the fourth floor, Rosado said.

The cause of the fire, which was controlled about 1:30 a.m., remained under investigation Sunday morning.
