A 45-year-old Wheaton man has been charged with fatally stabbing his neighbor.
The murder happened near a yard where a newborn baby was found abandoned earlier this month, according to a published report.
Michael Delany is charged with stabbing Michael Scalzo, 40, six times in the torso. Police found Scalzo in a garage area behind Delaney's Wheaton home on Friday.
Authorities say officers saw Delany running away from the scene. They pursued and captured him and found the weapon allegedly used nearby.
Scalzo was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police say they interviewed nine witnesses. The DuPage County State's Attorney on Saturday approved charges of first degree murder against Delany, and he goes before a judge for a bond hearing Monday.
Scalzo, who worked as a mechanic and was known as "Motorcycle Mike," lived
near the yard where a newborn baby boy was found on June 12, the Chicago Tribune reported. Friends told the Tribune that Scalzo had told them he wanted to raise money for a fund to help abandoned children.
On the day the baby was found, CBS 2's Derrick Blakley interviewed a man named Michael Scalzo about the incident.
"I'm in shock. Absolutely in shock," Scalzo said in the interview. "I mean, for Wheaton, I've never heard of anything like this happening in Wheaton. We get our typical burglaries, car break-ins, but nothing like this."
The baby boy's mother, Nunu Sung, 24, of Wheaton, was later charged with abandoning him.
