Man Shot Father, Brother During Family Feud

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A man who allegedly shot his brother and father during a domestic dispute then holed himself inside a nearby West Side home remains in police custody Sunday morning.

Emergency crews originally responded to a shooting at 3037 W. Lexington St. about 12:20 p.m., Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor said.

A man apparently shot his 16-year-old brother and father, believed to be in his 50s, during an argument inside their home, a law enforcement source said. Relatives said the gunman was bipolar.

The man then fled to a relative's home in the 1800 block of South Ridgeway Avenue, police News Affairs Officer JoAnn Taylor said.

A Hostage Barricade Terrorist Incident unit was initially sent to the scene and the situation was resolved as of 3:45 p.m., according to Taylor, who said the man was taken into police custody.

Police said Sunday morning the man remained in custody and charges were pending.

The man and teen were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, MacGregor said. According to unconfirmed fire dispatch reports, one of the shooting victims suffered two gunshot wounds to the abdomen and a second victim suffered a gunshot wound to the neck. Both were reportedly talking and conscious as they were taken to the hospital.

A relative identified the victims as 16-year-old Malcolm Johnson and his father, Milton Johnson, who is a social worker that sometimes works with the mentally ill.

Malcolm Johnson's sister said her brother, a sophomore at Manley High School, was shot trying to protect their father.

"We're still unsure how he's going to come through," she said.

Harrison Area detectives are investigating.
