Firefighter Hurt Battling 2-alarm Fire

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A fireman was injured Saturday afternoon while extinguishing a two-alarm fire in the West Side's Austin neighborhood.

The fire started about 3:30 p.m. in a 2 ½-story building at 176 N. Leamington Ave. and was elevated to a second alarm, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado.

The fire started in vacant building and spread into a neighboring building at 183 N. Leamington Ave., Rosado said. The second building may have been occupied, but no residents were injured.

A fireman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition after he injured his ankle battling the fire, which was extinguished at 4:02 p.m.

The extent of damage to the buildings was being assessed, and the cause of the blaze remained under investigation, Rosado said.
