Authorities have charged a West Rogers Park teenager with felony leaving the scene of a fatal accident, after he allegedly
slammed into two pedestrians and killed them near his home earlier this week.
Carlos Hernandez-Garcia, 19, of the 6300 block of North Maplewood Avenue, was charged in the Monday night accident at Western and Devon avenues, police News Affairs said.
The accident killed Christy Cawthon, 34, and Yakho Oshana, 50. They were crossing against the light and the car allegedly driven by Hernandez-Garcia had the green, but failed to yield. He also drove off on Western Avenue after the accident.
The impact of the collision threw Oshana into the southbound lanes of Western Avenue about a quarter of a block south of the intersection and knocked his shoes off his feet. A woman's purse was also lying in the southbound lanes and broken glass was scattered over the street.
Witnesses were able to help police track down the vehicle a red, early 1990s model Honda car with a loud muffler and it was located away from the scene a short time after the crash with severe front-end damage, according to Libert and Rogers Park District Sgt. Mike Muszynsky. The driver was not in the vehicle when it was found.
Oshana was the owner of the Assyrian Social Club at Devon and Sacramento avenues, and a nearby coffee shop. He had lived in the area since 1976, and witnesses said he and Cawthon were friends.
