Teen Shot And Killed By Waukegan Police

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (STNG) ― Police shot and killed a north suburban teenager Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly struck an officer with a hammer, according to police.

About 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, Waukegan police responded to a call of subjects fighting in the 500 block of Helmholz, according to a release from the chief's office.

When officers arrived, they found subjects fighting, and when they tried to break up the fight, one subject struck an officer in the head with a hammer, the release said.

A second officer then pulled his gun and fired at the subject, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told the Lake County News-Sun the victim was Jeffrey Lewis, a 17-year-old Waukegan High School student and a defensive back on the football team.

The officer who was hit in the head was taken to Lake Forest Hospital in Lake Forest, according to reports from the scene. A second officer was also hospitalized with an undisclosed injury.

The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the incident.
