A car is now the scene of a murder investigation in the South Austin neighborhood.

Police found the body of James Hunter, 23, in the 5900 block of West Walton Street. He was shot there around 10:45 p.m. and pronounced dead at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park.

Hunter was driving westbound on Walton Street when an unknown person approached the car and fired shots causing Hunter to crash into parked vehicles that were unattended, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez. Hunter was the only one in the car at the time.

Hunter suffered gunshot wounds to his body, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

Police have no descriptions of the offender and no one was in custody as of 8 a.m. Hunter had gang affiliation, police said.
