Streeterville Veterans' Hospital To Come Down
Preparation Begins For Demolition Of Vacated Building
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
Preparation has begun for demolition of the vacated Lakeside Veterans Administration Hospital building in the Streeterville area on the campus of Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, the two announced Tuesday.
The building, bordered by Erie and Huron streets, and Fairbanks and McClurg courts, was purchased by Northwestern Memorial after the VA announced plans to close it.
Northwestern Memorial and RIC are working on plans for future development of the site, according to a release from Northwestern. No specific plans or development timetable have been established.
Work has started on erection of barricades and partial structures around the site and above some sidewalks.
The north parking lane of Erie Street will be closed for most of the east side of the block between Fairbanks and McClurg. Most truck access and outlets to the site will be located on Erie.
Some interior demolition has begun and will continue through August.
Starting on or about May 19 and lasting one week, the generator building on the west side of the property will be taken down, the release said. Construction crews will then drive sheeting and excavate underground storage tanks beneath the parking area on the west side of the site.
Demolition of the exterior will begin in late June and last through March of 2009.
