Beloved Veteran Killed In Robbery At Home
Bill Burtner Served 2 Tours In Vietnam, Dedicated Life To Helping Veterans
MIDLOTHIAN, Ill. (CBS) ―
Bill Burtner served two tours of duty in Vietnam and dedicated his life to helping other veterans, only to lose his life to violence here at home.
Burtner, 65, was assaulted and robbed Monday as he was about to enter the at A.J. Smith Federal Bank, at 14757 Cicero Ave. in Midlothian, to deposit money raised in a benefit for veterans.
Burtner, of Chicago's Mount Greenwood neighborhood, died Wednesday from his injuries at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Burtner was commander of Midlothian VFW Post 2580.
One of the suspects, Jerry Brown of Calumet City, was arrested and charged. The other remains on the loose.
