Motorcyclist Killed While Trying To Avoid Birds
VALPARAISO, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A motorcyclist died trying to avoid a flock of birds crossing a northwest Indiana road on Sunday afternoon.
David Schubert II of Valparaiso, who turned 36 this month, was given CPR by an off-duty firefighter until paramedics arrived at the scene. He was pronounced dead at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart.
According to witnesses, Schubert and a friend, Calvin Fraley of Crown Point, were on their motorcycles going east on Division Road, near County Road 675W in Valparaiso about 3:55 p.m.
A group of birds -- either turkeys, geese or ducks -- were in the road and Schubert veered his 1986 Harley-Davidson into the oncoming lane to go around them. A west-bound vehicle came over the hill and hit the motorcycle head-on.
The second driver, Liadakis Stamatios, 23, of Valparaiso, suffered minor injuries. Police are continuing to investigate but do not believe he could have avoided the crash.
