Controversy Clouds First Day At U Of I
2 Trustees In Standoff With Governor Quinn
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (CBS) ―
Controversy clouds the first day of school at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, following an admissions scandal involving political clout.
As classes begin Monday, the fate of university trustees is up in the air. Seven of the nine trustees have resigned.
Gov. Pat Quinn is trying to get the remaining two trustees James Montgomery and Frances Carroll to resign,
and has indicated that he would consider firing them.
Montgomery and Carroll have both said they will not resign. Some U of I trustees said even with their resignation letters,
they hope Quinn reappoints them when the tumult dies down from the scandal over the influence of connections on school admissions.
Quinn previously said the issue of the remaining trustees would be dealt with Monday, but he has again delayed taking any action against them.
Quinn told reporters Sunday that he'll be at a military funeral in Romeoville on Monday and will instead act later in the week.
Monday is also the first day of classes at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and at Springfield.
