Fire Breaks Out In U Of C Laboratory Building

Hazardous Materials Response Called

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Embers from roof work being done on a building on the University of Chicago campus in Hyde Park on the South Side fell through the roof, starting a brief fire that was extinguished within about a half hour Tuesday afternoon.

A still-and-box alarm was called at 1:10 p.m. for a fire at 5824 S. Ellis Ave., the Franklin McLean Institute, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis. A Level 1 HazMat response was also called a few minutes later.

Work on the roof of the seven-story building caused embers to drop down onto the seventh floor and start the a fire, Curtis said.

The fire and the HazMat response were both struck out at 1:40 p.m.

The building was evacuated, but because the fire was extinguished, people have been able to go back inside, U of C spokesman Jeremy Manier said. He did not know, though, if it was OK as of 3 p.m. for people to return to the seventh floor.

The Franklin McLean Institute houses research labs primarily, Manier said, as well as administrative and faculty offices. There are no University of Chicago Hospital patients in that building, he said.

No injuries were reported, Curtis said.
