As more and more bicyclists like Ed Dixon take to Chicagoland's roads, authorities are urging cyclists and motorists to follow the rules of the road and be more cautious.

Chicago Police and Mayor Daley's Bicycling Ambassadors will hit the streets Tuesday night, the first of three scheduled missions to catch and educate unsafe bicyclists.
Starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Shakespeare District officers and the bicycling ambassadors will patrol the Near Northwest Side's Wicker Park neighborhood by bike, stopping cyclists riding without headlamps, according to a release from the city Department of Transportation.
Thursday afternoon, starting at 3 p.m., ambassadors and officers from the Town Hall District will patrol the Lakeview neighborhood, stopping cyclists riding through traffic lights and stop signs on Halsted between Belmont and Irving Park.
From 3-6 p.m. Friday, cyclists in the Edgewater neighborhood had better stay off the sidewalks, because Lincoln District officers and the ambassadors will station themselves at Ardmore Avenue and Sheridan Road, stopping sidewalk-riding cyclists, the release said.
No citations will be issued at any of the events, the release said. The campaigns are only designed to be informational and hopefully change behaviors.
The emphasis on safety comes with the increasing popularity of bicycling for transportation and recreation in Chicago, according to the release. The development of an enforcement program targeting particularly dangerous cycling is one of the strategies of the city's Bike 2015 plan.
