U. Of C. Tuition With Room And Board Hits $48,000
5 Percent Hike Planned For 2008-09 School Year
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
The University of Chicago has approved a tuition hike of nearly 5 percent for college students, bringing the cost of attending with room and board to more than $48,000.
Effective for the 2008-09 school year tuition for the College will be $36,892. With room and board, the estimated total cost is $48,488, the university said.
But fewer than half of the student body will actually pay that much, the university said.
"We continue to be extremely committed to student aid at Chicago so that bright, talented students can fully engage in the College experience, regardless of their financial situations," said U. of C. Vice President and Dean of College Enrollment Michael Behnke.
He said the university is expanding student aid programs, including a new program called Odyssey which is funded through an anonymous $100 million gift from an alumnus.
The U. of C. has long been one of the most expensive institutions in the nation, but in the past decade, its tuition has risen dramatically. A decade ago for the 1998-99 school year, tuition with room and board was $30,508, a 1998 news release said.
But among the most expensive schools in the nation, the U. of C. is not even in the top five. The nation's most expensive university in 2007-08 was George Washington University in Washington D.C., where tuition was $39,240 before room and board costs, according to Forbes. Following it were Kenyon College in Ohio, Bucknell University in Pennsylvania, Vassar College in upstate New York, and Sarah Lawrence College just outside New York City.
The University of Illinois also hiked tuition at its three campuses for next year, bringing tuition with room and board to $20,428 in Champaign-Urbana, $19,760 in Chicago, and $17,920 in Springfield.
