United Airlines Warns Of More Possible Layoffs

CHICAGO (AP) ― United Airlines has warned its flight attendants union that it may seek to cut 250 more jobs in January, after furloughing 1,550 flight attendants earlier this fall.

The Association of Flight Attendants said Chicago-based United said Friday night it would decide whether it needs the deeper cuts by Jan. 9.

United told the union it was reviewing staffing as it further reduces capacity and accelerates plans to reconfigure the Airbus A320 aircraft previously operated as Ted, its defunct low-cost carrier operation.

The potential cut is one of many painful measures United is taking as it eliminates 7,000 jobs and cuts the size of its airline operations because of the tough global economy.

The layoffs at United began in early summer, as it also made plans to ground 100 older airplanes, about 20 percent of its fleet, by the end of 2009.
