Repairs Postponed For Power Lines Over Tri-State

Crane Knocked Down Power Lines Tuesday Morning

GLENVIEW, Ill. (CBS) ― Repairs to power lines over the Tri-State Tollway have been postponed. Crews were set to shut down the entire tollway for two one-hour periods Tuesday afternoon to repair downed power lines, but instead those repairs will be rescheduled at a later date.

A crane knocked down the power lines just south of Willow Road around 8:05 a.m. Tuesday, leaving 400,000-volt power lines lying across all lanes of the expressway.

ComEd said those lines were still energized when they fell, but were de-energized by 8:54 a.m. CBS 2's Kris Habermehl said traffic was moving again by 9:13 a.m.

Originally, ComEd had planned to begin repairs to the power lines around noon, forcing traffic to be shut down on the Tri-State off-and-on for a total of about two hours. But a ComEd spokesperson said those repairs have been postponed until a later date.

There were no serious injuries reported from the incident, Illinois State Police Tollway District Master Sergeant Thomas Gartner said, though the operator of the crane that knocked the wires down was treated by an ambulance crew. He did not know the extent of the crane operator's injuries.
