Weather Wreaks Havoc On Woman's Travel Day
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
Bad weather meant bad holiday travel for a lot of people. CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman met one woman who had quite the story to tell.
"I even got a little rest," said Lorri Powell, who was sitting in the baggage claim area when we met her.
The good-natured, stranded passenger has gotten a really good look at O'Hare Airport Wednesday. She's been canceled and delayed, but for more than just a few hours.
Hers is a holiday travel tale from hell - that she's choosing to keep positive.
"Well, yeah," she laughed.
It all began at 1 a.m. this morning, when Powell put the pedal to the metal from Martin to Nashville, Tennessee. From there she caught a flight to Chicago. But, when she got here around 8:30 a.m., bad weather meant a no-go on her connection to Minneapolis-St. Paul.
She was told the only flight she could get was Thursday night at 10:15.
"I was like, 'Can't you get me anything else closer?'" Powell said.
The answer was no.
Powell said, "So I called for a one-way rental car. They didn't have anything."
She went to Union Station with the hope of catching an Amtrak train.
"They were all booked up, sold out," she said, "So my son is driving up from St. Paul to pick up his mom."
He is the one reason Powell put herself through all this. And so is her granddaughter, Madison, who'll she'll be meeting for the first time this Christmas.
"We'll get to bond in the seven or eight hour drive," said Powell.
That they did. She gave Madison a hug and a kiss. Madison said, "I love you, Grandma." Words that made all the trouble worth it.
