Train Derailment Causes Explosion Near Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. (CBS) ― A freight train has derailed near Rockford, authorities said, and witnesses reported that an explosion created flames that could be seen for miles.

The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department confirms the derailment. The Rockford Register Star is reporting that witnesses say the train derailed Friday night at about 8:30, apparently because heavy rains had washed out the tracks.

Several cars of a freight train jumped the tracks. The train was carrying ethanol sulfuric acid, which caught fire. Flames can be seen for miles.
Area residents are being evacuated from their homes, and there are reports of burn injuries.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
