Cop Faces Federal Charges In Towing Scam

CHICAGO (CBS) ― A Chicago police officer faced federal fraud charges in court Thursday as part of a case first revealed by CBS 2 Investigator Pam Zekman.

Twenty-fifth District Chicago Police Officer Joseph Grillo, and collision towing owner James "Meatball" Athans, both pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors say the two men conspired with others to illegally collect an insurance claim. The feds say the men had a car towed and then reported it stolen.

Two other police officers have also been charged in the on-going federal probe into insurance fraud and bribery.
