Tornado Warning Called Off For Northwest Suburbs

McHenry, Kane Counties Affected

HUNTLEY, Ill. (CBS) ― A tornado warning was issued for parts of southern McHenry and northern Kane counties, but was later called off as the storm system weakened.

The National Weather Service has indicated tornadic rotation in a severe thunderstorm that was spotted 8 miles west of Huntley at 8:52 a.m., and continued through Lake in the Hills.

A spotter reported seeing a funnel cloud in Lake in the Hills, but said it didn't touch down.

But by 9:22 a.m., the National Weather Service decided the storm had weakened and was not a tornado threat anymore.

Anyone in these areas is advised to take cover immediately. If there is no basement, move into an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows, if possible. Avoid mobile homes and vehicles.

Elsewhere in the area, overnight storms caused widespread flooding on Chicago area roads and left an estimated 82,000 ComEd customers without power. The power problems may be to blame for the shutdown of the Red Line 'L' between Granville and Belmont.

A risk of severe weather continues throughout the day.
