A man and a toddler were rescued from Lake Michigan in the Lincoln Park neighborhood on the North Side Friday afternoon.
Authorities say the 60-year-old man was walking his 2-year-old grandson when the wind pushed the three-wheeled jogging stroller into the water at about 2:30 p.m. Friday.
The man jumped into the water to rescue the boy, at which point the harbor master noticed a problem and also entered the water. Four additional divers also helped in the rescue.
Authorities say the child was in the water for 15 minutes before divers were able to find him and pull him out.
"Almost immediately these divers located that child," said Chicago Fire Department Commander Ron Dorneker. "That child was found in a stroller. The water temperature is about 42 degrees. The depth of the water is about 10 to 12 feet. Child was brought to the surface, turned over to our EMS personnel and they made the transport to the hospitals."
The toddler was taken to Children's Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The grandfather, who was alert and talking, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in serious condition.
