Toddler Drowns After Riding Trike Into Pool

NEW LENOX (STNG) ― Funeral services will be Saturday for a toddler who rode his tricycle into the family's pool and drowned on Tuesday morning.

Blake Habich, who would have turned 2 on Aug. 14, was found floating face down in the pool by his mother, Wendy Habich, at about 11 a.m. She called a neighbor, and they performed CPR until New Lenox paramedics arrived, Will County sheriff's office spokesman Pat Barry said. Paramedics took Blake to Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, where he was pronounced dead at 11:44 a.m., according to the Will County coroner's office. The preliminary cause of death was ruled a drowning, pending a final investigation.

Barry said Blake was riding a Big Wheel-style tricycle and apparently rode into the pool, which was gated, but not locked. The tricycle was found in the pool, he said.

"It's a horrible, tragic accident," Barry said. "We want to remind people that any time a kid is outside and there is a pool, make sure an adult is out there. Every year, there are a few of these incidents. It's an absolute tragedy."

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Colonial Chapel, 15525 S. 73rd Ave., Orland Park, with the funeral at 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. The toddler will be buried in Mount Greenwood Cemetery, 2900 W. 111th St., Chicago.

Blake is survived by his parents, Wendy and Joel of New Lenox Twp.; his siblings, Jordan and Sydney; his grandparents, Linda and Richard Jozsa and Jean and Donald Habich; and great-grandparent Alvina Jozsa.
