Thanksgiving was more special than usual this year for a 23-year-old woman from far west suburban Elburn.
Cassie Stanley was celebrating a year of new life, giving thanks to some dedicated doctors and nurses at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.
Stanley and her boyfriend, Nick Gore, came back to the Park Ridge hospital, a year to the day after she almost died from cystic fibrosis. They were happy to see the medical staff that pulled her through her crisis just days before a life-saving double lung transplant.
And Stanley was sporting a fancy new engagement ring -- Gore had popped the question Thursday morning.
"I think things are getting on page and starting to get good and I was just shocked," Stanley said.
"So kinda fitting with being thankful for everything and being thankful that she's still with us, I thought today would be a good day to propose to her and move on with our lives," Gore said.
The couple reunited with doctors, nurses and hospital volunteers..
"I just wanted to come back and give thanks to everyone, my doctors and nurses, everyone who had a helping hand," Stanley said.
And the pair helped serve holiday dinners to patients and their families in the children's unit. Stanley described it as a chance to "pay it forward."
So this is a miracle day for Stanley and Gore and a day for the genuine giving of thanks. Life, it seems, is bountiful in many ways.
The meals were donated by the non-profit group called Peanut Butter and Jelly for Children. The kids got more than that Thursday, dining on turkey and all those proverbial trimmings.
